Catching a Trout Grand Slam - Niagara Style!

Catching a trout slam

A trout grand slam is one of the most exciting feats you can achieve in freshwater, and involves catching 3 different trout species in one day.

During spring and fall on the Niagara River, there is a good chance of catching Lake Trout, Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout (steelhead) in the same day, and sometimes in the same drift!

This past year, I had the pleasure of guiding several clients to this accomplishment, fishing different techniques throughout the day to land rainbows, browns and lakers.

How to earn a trout slam

The IGFA (International Game Fish Association) recognizes anglers who submit their catch photos and details to their website to help celebrate this special accomplishment. https://igfa.org/grand-slam-application/

To earn your recognition, IGFA has an easy online submission portal where anglers can upload photos and catch details. Entries are scrutinized to maintain the integrity of the accomplishment.

Fishing in March and April, and December, my guests have a legitimate chance at achieving a trout slam as all three species load up on baitfish in the Niagara River and Lake Ontario.
